Death Knights were created by Metrion during the Fifth Age when he was released from the Afterlife Realm by the Binturians in the short months before the Planar War. In alliance with Vierfrynn, the two of them constructed several dark creations and monstrosities. Metrion’s labor yielded the corrupted warriors known as Death Knights. With his vast understanding and Vierfrynn’s means, Metrion constructed the techniques of Runeforging. While Runes have existed in the world previously, most notably used by the Dwarves, Metrion’s had the benefit of near indestructibility, non-magical channeling, and self-restoration. Into these Runes, Metrions poured his malice, will, and Undeath, giving unto them the capacity to conjure the essences of the Netherworld, a small portion of the Afterlife Realm.
Metrion created only a few Death Knights before he was sealed away again after the events known as Darkfell. Though only a few were needed. Embedded onto their weapons are the forged Runes, transforming their weapon into a Runeblade, glowing a misty teal blue, the runes appearing as Skulls made of Blood, Ice, and Rot. Their eyes glow blue with the flavor and power of the Netherealms, connecting them forever with Metrion, under his will. Death Knight’s races are corrupted by the Netherealms, never truly of their people anymore as they are connected to their runes and amplified by Undeath.
The first Death Knights created were four human mortals that Metrion made into the coalition known as the Order of Ruin. The Four: Ebon, Plague, Blood, and Ice. From these four, the Reaper of Undeath intended on creating and enforcing the rules and spread of Undeath amongst the land. However, he was sealed away before this. Before that though, in his angst he poured part of his will and power into a skull that would lead and empower the Order of Ruin in his absence. The Order now follows in Metrion’s steps, bringing his will upon the land and attempting to return their master back to the realm.
